Settling into Ljubljana, Feb 2-8

My first full week in Ljubljana unfolded gently, shaped more by daily rhythms than by major sightseeing. After catching up on sleep, I explored without urgency. I wandered through the city market, climbed to the castle, and discovered neighborhood restaurants along the way. Meals became small cultural lessons, from mushroom soup to my first home cooked dinner made with market ingredients just steps from my apartment.

Rain was a steady companion, yet it never slowed the city. Instead, it framed my early efforts to navigate paperwork, register residency, and apply for a tax ID. Each small success, even mastering the moka pot, felt like progress toward becoming less of a visitor and more of a resident.

My first Fulbright meeting at the U.S. Embassy reinforced that I am here not only to teach and conduct research, but also to engage in cultural exchange. That exchange was visible everywhere. Children gathered at Prešeren Square preparing for the holiday. LUV Fest decorations appeared across the city. Weekend markets overflowed with color and energy.

By Sunday, climbing the castle tower and watching locals fill the streets and cafés, I felt something shift. This week was not defined by grand moments, but by small victories and growing familiarity. Ljubljana is beginning to feel lived in rather than new.
